Where does this story fit into the timeline of the F&F movie series?
JL: The thing is, it’s a unique franchise in that it goes all over the map. As a filmmaker I went with the drifting craze, but I wanted to take it back this time. I wanted to talk to car people about getting it straight and so I had to go backwards to a time before the first movie. I viewed classics like “Bullitt” and “Rendevous” which made the car the star. I wanted to get a sense of danger with big heaps of metal going at speeds that feel like physics are being betrayed. We tried to do that on the last film, we nailed it on this one. I talked with the diehard fans, we gave it a load of thought and wanted to set the movie series straight … from the beginning. PAS: Who made the decision to use the original actors? Why? JL: We really got to get in there and play with the characters this time. Vin surprised us with his cameo appearance at the end of Tokyo Drift. Everyone said it wasn’t possible and I explained to Vin the storyline for the next film, he said “yes” and that in itself cre
