An inspector is normally a high ranking person in the Detective Bureau. There is no national standard for rank, although many departments follow military rank structure. The problem is, “Inspector” is not a military rank, so it would be up to the department to determine where that falls. The departments that use it around me designate the Inspector as the senior Lieutenant, but I’ve seen larger departments where it is equal to Major, which would be just above Captain. Additional: There is no rule mandating where “Inspector” falls in the chain of command. No hedging necessary.
