Where does the name Tarkine originate?
The name “Tarkine” refers to a vast area of wilderness bordered by the Pieman and Arthur Rivers. The name reflects the strong indigenous history of the region. The “Tarkiner” band of Indigenous Tasmanians lived in the region for thousands of years, frequenting the food-rich coastline as well as making seasonal migrations in land. The name Tarkine was dubbed by George Augustus Robinson after encountering the Tarkineer people near the Arthur river.
