Where does the Evangelical Free denomination come from?
The Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) traces its roots to Reformations of the Lutheran church in Norway and Sweden. Back in the 1800’s the governments of both countries sponsored the Lutheran churches of both countries. As is usually the case in government controlled religion, the church in both of these countries had progressively digressed into greater and greater theological liberalism. Some believers in the historic teachings of Christianity decided to start new churches that were based on Scripture (Evangelical) and also independent of government control (Free). These reformations in Norway and Sweden happened independently, but many of the Norwegians and Swedes from these Churches eventually migrated to the U.S. The Norwegian and Swedish Evangelical Free Churches merged in the 1940s to become the Evangelical Free Church of America.
