Where does the District get the electricity it distributes to retail customers?
Merced Irrigation District Electric Services has secure long-term and flexible short-term sources for electricity. These agreements mean new customers have access to power as soon as they’re hooked up, and that reliable, low-cost power is available for the long haul. The District has a long-term, fixed-price agreement with the Modesto Irrigation District that provides most of the power distributed. We also have an agreement with the Turlock Irrigation District (TID) that allows us access to power on a short-term basis, which flexibly provides for the needs of new customers. Both Modesto Irrigation District and TID are reliable sources for power, with proven experience in the electric utility business. Down the road, the District will deliver hydroelectric power-generated at the New Exchequer and McSwain Dams directly to Merced County customers.
