Where does the Baby New Year come from?
This is the modernized result of old superstition. The ancient pagans believed that during anniversaries (New Year’s Day being the opening of a new year), demons could gain entry into human lives. They also liked to humanize events, so they tended to see the year as a person who was born and grew old in the course of a year. For these reasons, they invented rituals to please their gods and scare off demons. The parties, noisemakers, lights and so on were created for this very reason. Notably, believers in God’s word, whether faithful Jews or genuine Christians have never involved themselves in these superstitious rites, knowing that the true God rejects such displays of devotion to false gods. The drunken stupors, increased violence and traffic deaths are the modern fruitage of clinging to pagan Babylonian festivals and false beliefs. Jesus said regarding identifying true and false religion, ‘you will know them by their fruits’.
