Where does sexuality fit into the K-6 curriculum?
Human sexuality forms part of the subject matter in the Growth and Development strand of the K–6 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) Syllabus. It provides opportunities for students to explore the emotional, social and physical changes that occur in the human body through the different stages of development. Other related subject matter that may support the teaching of sexuality education is as follows: Personal identity including feelings, needs, wants, emotions, self concept, gender roles, setting goals, confronting problems and self-esteem. The body including body systems, senses, body care and maintenance. Values including rights and responsibilities, challenging discrimination and accepting diversity. Changes including the development from childhood to adulthood, heredity, emotional changes, coping with stress and grief and loss.
