Where Does President Bush Stand?
For the administration of President George W. Bush, the question goes beyond whether waterboarding of suspected terrorists is right or wrong. Bush and his White House policymakers won’t even say whether they have engaged in waterboarding, according to a Washington Post report that is making headlines today. If Americans want to know, apparently they will have to press for answers through a tide of greater public sentiment. Waterboarding is a form of interrogation torture, going back to the Spanish Inquisition that started during the late 15th century. The torture subject is immobilized on his back with his head tilted downward. Water is poured over the face and into the mouth and nose. The subject feels that he will drown unless he offers information. The question of whether the United States, leader of the free world, currently engages in waterboarding will end after Jan. 20, 2009, when a new president is inaugurated into office.
