Where does Ottawas garbage go?
Roughly two-thirds of it goes to the Trail Road Waste Facility landfill, which is City owned and operated. The other third goes to the Carp Road facility in West Carleton, which is owned and operated by Waste Management Canada Inc. Of the 310,879 tonnes of residential solid waste collected in 2005, about two-thirds of it (212,796 tonnes) went to landfill. This is what happened to the one-third remaining: 29,595 tonnes of leaf and yard waste were composted 1,986 tonnes from the food waste pilot were composted 419 tonnes of household hazardous waste, 48% of which was recycled, the rest incinerated or sent to a special hazardous waste landfill.
