Where does methanol come from? Where does ethanol come from?
A. Methanol is a common industrial chemical and is typically produced from natural gas (methane) and coal-based electricity. Our process differs in that we synthesize methanol from atmospheric CO2 and renewable electricity, thus providing a carbon neutral, green fuel. Ethanol is a biofuel that is derived from fermentable sugars. Typically corn, sugarcane, and malted grains are the feedstock for ethanol manufacture. With the help of yeast, sugars from food crops are converted into ethanol. The dependence of fuel ethanol on food crops is becoming a major issue and is causing large negative effects on food supplies and food prices around the world. Methanol has absolutely no dependence on food crops whatsoever. Methanol is not a biofuel.
