Where does karate originate from?
Karate as we know it originated from Okinawa at the start of the 1900s. Okinawa is an island province of Japan, south of Japan and East of China. However, the martial arts upon which karate is based, are thousands of years old. Researchers suggest that they came from India to China, and from there to Japan and Okinawa. However, there are indications that Alexander the Great’s soldiers practiced a not dissimilar form of unarmed combat in Greece over 2000 years ago, and it is even suggested that hieroglyphics show the Ancient Egyptians practicing something similar as long ago as 3000BC. It is probable that the art that became karate is a fusion between a native Okinawan wrestling style and Chinese kung fu.
