Where Does GM Find its Great Car Designers?
During the past several years, General Motors Design has added about 200 sculptors, designers and others to its staff in Warren, Mich. Their job is to create ideas for exciting cars that do what people want – cars so functional and cool that people “must have” them. “Vehicles like the Cadillac CTS and Pontiac Solstice concept don’t just happen,” said Wayne Cherry, GM vice president of Design. “They are the products of inspired imaginations.” Unlocking creativity requires a solid education in science, math and technology. This includes experience with the automotive industry as a business, product or industrial design, and math-based design tools. However, technical skill isn’t the only criteria GM Design looks for when choosing new people to join their team. “We also look for innovative, creative thinkers with a passion for what they’re doing,” said Sheryl Garrett, a GM Design resource manager. Women, minority and international employees also are highly desired because GM wants its des
