Where does drug raid money go?
MYRTLE BEACH – We hear of drug busts and seizures on somewhat of a regular basis. That’s when law enforcement agencies take drugs, money, and paraphernalia connected with illegal drug use and distribution. After the seizure, most of the money taken goes back to the agency that conducted the raid. But Keith and Angie McKenzie want to know, “Why can’t we use all of the money seized in drug raids to do good things for our country like building community centers, cleaning up parks, and funding after school programs?” Sid Gaulden with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says it is a requirement for any money that comes from a drug bust to be used for drug-enforcement programs. He said for a state-involved bust, the SCHP receives 80% of the money involved while the local solicitor’s office receives 20% of the money.
