Where does Canada rank internationally in terms of progress in electronic commerce?
Indicators of connectedness show that the Government of Canada has helped make Canada one of the most connected nations in the world. The Statistics Canada survey shows that Canada is well positioned to take advantage of the e-commerce marketplace, but must accelerate its adoption and use of e-commerce to remain competitive. For example, the Economist Intelligence Unit publishes an annual e-readiness ranking of the world’s largest economies measuring a country’s e-business environment, indicating how amenable a market is to Internet-based opportunities. Although Canada’s score increased slightly in 2005 from the previous year, its ranking dropped to number twelve indicating that other countries are moving faster in creating Internet-based opportunities. The Net Impact Canada IV study, 2004, by the Canadian e-Business Initiative (CeBI) reported that Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) lag behind those in the U.S. and the E.U. in the adoption of operationally-focussed Inte
