Where does Botulinum toxin come from?
Botulinum toxin is produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum which is found in soil. The botulinum toxin that is used therapeutically is a highly purified and specially formulated form of the toxin. Seven types (called serotypes labelled A-G) of botulinum toxin are produced by bacteria. Type A has been used successfully by doctors for around 15 years.
