Where does Aluminium come from and how is it produced?
Aluminium is found primarily in bauxite ore. Bauxite is refined into alumina (aluminium oxide trihydrate) and then electrolytically reduced into metallic aluminium. The Bayer Process – extracting alumina from bauxite: Bauxite contains only 30-54% alumina, the rest being a mixture of silica, various iron oxides, and titanium dioxide. The alumina must be purified before it can be refined to aluminium metal.
