Where do you think that Forensic science would be today if sherlock holmes never been created?
Well even if Sherlock Holmes himself never did create anything that helped the science, being a fictional character and all, he did popularized many methods that were considered revolutionary at the time, such as finger printing, foot printing, the comparison of typewritten letters to expose a fraud, Cryptanalysis, the use of gunpowder residue, Ballistics etc.
