Where do wetlands occur?
Wetlands occur over a wide variety of sites from the top of the highest mountain to mudflats and nearshore reefs at sea level. They are subject to considerable spatial and temporal variation and, being subject to varying degrees of wetness according to differing climatic, hydrologic and topographic influences, they span a continuum of environments where terrestrial and aquatic systems integrate.
