Where do things currently stand in Canada?
In phase one of the project, a consultant team comprised of two project partners will do a “paper review”, whereby they will review legal documents, policy reports and institutional protocols, as well a survey of key stakeholders from across Canada to canvas the key laws and policies as well as some practice issues related to abuse and neglect of older persons in institutional settings. The snapshot examines relevant health care and other policies, laws, regulations, and standards that are used to: a) prevent and address abuse or neglect of residents and/or b) promote safe, supportive, respectful environments in long-term care facilities. The key areas to be explored include laws, regulations, standards of care, any regulations or standards specifically for abuse incidents, definitions of abuse and neglect, scope and protections for reporting (residents, staff, and families).
