it depends on what type of termite you are talking about. They not just eat wood, but cellulose…I have found them eating my turnips before… pretty much anything from or derived from a plant can give them a food source. Most of the US have subterranean termites which are located in the ground…some parts of the country have dry wood termites which are actually nesting in the wood itself, not needing to return to the soil. There are a couple of other species that even have different nesting sites than listed.
