Where Do Swallows Go in the Winter?
Swallows, as we all know now, migrate to warmer southern climes. I say, know now, as there was a time when they were thought to hibernate in the mud at the bottom of ponds. It’s true; I’ve got a reprint of an old book that proves it. Apparently the theory arose from the fact they were most often seen first each spring feeding in low sweeps across the surface of ponds. This of course was centuries before anyone had either the technology or interest needed to track their seasonal movements. There are a very few outdoor bowlers who can afford to migrate to their preferred warmer southern climes for the winter, but most have the option of bowling indoors or finding alternative occupations whilst awaiting the new season. Quite a few of our Members have regular league or friendly commitments indoors over winter, but for those who don’t, the Club has traditionally laid on a small number of friendly fixtures.
