Where Do Steel Cans Go?
The Greens know that every steel can is recyclable and can be recovered automatically from their household waste. This is because steel sticks to a magnet. The Greens live in a city where their local council uses huge electro-magnets to extract steel cans directly from the household rubbish. As a result, 80 per cent of the city’s steel cans are reclaimed and recycled. This ‘invisible’ recycling happens in many of the UK’s major cities. In other areas, local councils provide Save-a-Can banks or other can banks for the collection of steel cans. Some councils also operate kerbside schemes, where residents sort their recyclables at home. Both systems will often take all types of steel cans including drinks cans, food and petfood cans as well as aerosols and household product cans. Steel cans are so easy to recover from house-hold waste that over 80 per cent of local councils operate a collection scheme.
