Where Do Savvy Internet Users Flock?
A recent study by Nielsen/NetRatings reported that educational reference sites attracted nearly 46.4 million Internet users (thats 31% of the active Internet universe) in September 2005. The number indicates a 22% jump in that category from 2004. The study attributes this increase to the triple-digit growth of the Wikipedia and Yahoo! Education websites. Wikipedia is currently the fastest growing educational reference website. It attracted nearly 13 million unique visitors (different Internet users) in September 2005, a 289% increase in one year. Gerry Davidson, senior media analyst for Nielsen/NetRatings, says Wikipedia appeals to so many Internet users because it offers a unique element of user-interaction which people appreciate: It allows users to correct and add information on-line.
