Enterobius Vermicularus is the name given to the small thread looking worm everyone knows as the common human pinworm. It belongs to a family of parasites, and each branch of the family have a preference for a specific animal to infect. The human variety are spread from human to human, by ingesting (eating) the eggs the females lay around the anus at night. They exit the intestine to lay egs, and cause an intense itching. The child, or even adult, scratches in their sleep, and picks up the eggs under the fingernails. If they eat without washing their hands, or otherwise touch their mouth with unwashed hands, they reintroduce the eggs to their system. The eggs hatch, and repeat the cycle until they are all wiped out- usually with a medication. They are commonly spread among children in daycare and elementary school settings, and in a family from child to child to parent. A lot of people will blame dirt or pets, but that’s not true.
