Where do Lottery proceeds go?
Lottery proceeds benefit education construction, stadium debt reduction, and the General Fund. In November 2000, voters approved Initiative 728, redirecting all Lottery revenue contributions previously sent to the state General Fund to the Student Achievement Fund and the Education Construction Account. I-728 stipulated that after July 1, 2004, all Lottery revenue for education would be directed to the Education Construction Account. Of the Lottery’s total contributions in Fiscal Year ’08, 78.29 percent benefited education, 10.17 percent went to stadium debt reduction, and the remainder 2.82 percent was sent to economic development and .02 percent went to prevention and treatment of problem gambling. Washington’s Lottery contributed $102 million to education in fiscal year 2008.
