Where do I need ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI)?
According to the National Electric Codes (NEC/NFPA 70), GFCI protection is required on all outlets in kitchens along the counter, in bathrooms, pool and shower facilities, in unfinished basements and garages, and on piers and docks supplied with 110 volt power. OSHA (29 CFR 1926.404) defines “construction” as work for construction, alteration, and/or repair, including painting and decorating. If engaged in construction work, either GFCI s or an Assured Equipment-Grounding Program is required for all portable electric power tools energized using extension cords. Whenever using extension cords and power tools GFCI protection is recommended in all cases and required in most cases.
