Someone else could have set up a direct debit in their own name and either accidentally they gave the wrong account number or sort code, or the employee setting it up could have keyed the numbers in wrong leading to the mandate being set up on your account instead of the customer’s account. The other more worrying reason is that someone could have fraudulently used your account. I doubt it is the second one, as Homecare cover your home, so if you were committing fraud, why would you use the money on something linked to your own home? It would make it so easy to trace you. What is also of a concern is that when you fill in a direct debit mandate, they usually ask for the account number and sort code, but they also ask for the account name. When the bank set it up, they are meant to check the account name too, to make sure they have the right account.
