Where do hospitals send their records when they are sent off site?

I did my work experience at a hospital in the medical records department. And I believe its when they are sent to a different hospital because a patient needs them. (example, if the records are at the hospital where the patient usually checks in but the patient falls ill somewhere else and is taken to a different hospital, those notes then have to be transferred to that hospital asap if the patient is on some kind of medication, and so in the patients usual hospital the notes are put down on the system as off-site.) I’m probably wrong but worth a shot eh?
