Where do fruit flys come from?
Fruit flies are often encountered in and about the kitchen and near garbage storage areas. They are mostly found hovering around overly ripe fruits, fermenting materials such as left-over beer or soft drinks. They are often found in the kitchen, especially when vegetable or fruit (not necessarily over-ripe) materials are present. They may also infest the home through standing water like a forgotten mop pail or an open sewer drain. Like all other flies, the fruit fly develops by complete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid near or on top of attractants (fermenting materials) such as beverages, decaying fruit and vegetable matter, garbage or slime in drains. The fruit fly is attracted to any area where moisture has accumulated including mops and wet rags. The larvae emerge from the eggs and feed near the surface of the fermenting material/s for 5-6 days..
