Where do Floridas greenhouse gas emissions come from?
The best hard data we have about Florida greenhouse gas emissions comes for the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Of the total 243.9 million metric tons of energy-related carbon dioxide produced during 2003, the electric power and transportation sectors were responsible for over 90 percent of the emissions. The electric power industry had emissions of 125.1 million metric tons, equaling 51 percent of the total, and the combustion of motor fuels for all modes of transportation in Florida produced 98.2 million metric tons or 40 percent of the total. The total greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfills, cement plants, and agriculture – the other principal sources of emissions in Florida – have not yet been quantified, but a gross estimate would range from 20 to 30 million metric tons.
