Where do Flock Guard dogs fit into these different equations?
These dogs have been bred for over 200C years in the mountains of southern Europe to help shepherds keep wolves, bears and other predators from the flocks. They are alsc perfectly suited to keeping predators, whether bird, animal or human, from the unattended grazing herds of this country. Flock guard dogs live with and protect any stock to which they have been bonded. Brett Thompson now owns and works three Maremma dogs, one admittedly a pup in training. Brett took me onto his main goat property to see his dogs working. They were truly amazing! The pup was with a small mob of goats and was torn between desire for the company of Brett’s youngsters, who were with him, and his duty to his goats. He split the difference neatly, taking up a watching position, where he stayed for hours, from which he could see both children and his herd.
