Where do fine wines come from?
Most come from France. This isn’t a cunning Gallic con trick; the fact is that certain parts of France are probably the best places on earth for growing wine vines at this point in geological time and climatic evolution. (This means it will all change, though possibly not for half a million years.) Fine wines can come from many other countries too, wherever a happy conjunction of soil and climate meets the levels of general prosperity which permit high winemaking ideals to be realised. This is why California and Australia are further along the fine-wine route than are Romania and Bulgaria, though all may get there in the end.
