Harrison was born in Charles City County Virginia. He attended Hampden-Sydney College at the age of 14, but was later removed by his father because of the fact that he supported anti-slavery and became involved with Methodists and Quakers. Later on, Harrison then studied medicine under Dr. Benjamin Rush at the University of Pennsylvania.
