Where did Thomas Jefferson really stand on the issue of slavery?
He was never able to climb out of debt enough during his life to free his slaves. Thomas Jefferson did make sure that the constitution outlawed the importation of Africans after 1808. His prior attempts to abolish slavery were thwarted and in the constitution this was the best he could do.
