Where did this idea, of composing and selling poetry publicly, come from?
This idea came from actually going to a music festival. So I go to the Oregon Country Fair, and on the second day I’m just walking through and I see a poet, just sitting there on the side, typing. And so I got a poem on couch surfing. And I lost that poem, while couch surfing. She typed it out on a typewriter on white paper. When I got back to San Francisco I decided that I’m going to do that. That was about a year ago. Would you say it’s a movement? It’s a couple of people moving. You never know. Everything might be a movement. Would you say that what you write is at all influenced by the music you play? Or are they two different things? Well, it’s all one. One art gives you a break from the other one, but at the same time, they’re all inter-related. Have you ever written a song instead of a poem, when you are set up on Haight? Oh yeah. I’ve written people’s papers, I’ve done songs, I’ve typed up letters for people. What is it about writing for someone you don’t know? It’s nice. You g
