Where did these rumors start about the NHL expanding?
The rumours came from the Sports Business Journal ( as reported by Dan Wetzel in his Yahoo column) so there is some credence to it. Furthermore a new arena has been opened in Kansas City and management wants a pro sports team to anchor the facility. As such they are offering to allow an NHL team to operate there rent free and get a share of profits from concessions. Obviously that tempting package has enticed the NHL. Expansion now is a really bad idea. Unfortunately it is line with Bettman’s thinking of doing something in the short run while ignoring the long term ramifications. Sure the league gets the expansion fees from some sucker millionaire owners but the problem is that it further dilutes the talent pool. Teams that are already having problems competing lose some personnel and become worse. The NHL is in a crisis mode right now. The league is losing fans at an alarming rate and there is no excitement about the league right now. Attendance is pathetic in what used to be traditio
