Where did the Pennsylvania Dutch came from?
German settlers poured into Pennsylvania during colonial days and most of them couldn t speak English or if they could it was very broken English. Imagine that, immigrants coming to America without being able to speak English. When the mostly illiterate locals questioned these people about where they came from they identified themselves as Deutschlanders and they said that they spoke Deutsch so the locals thought that they were Dutch. Much to the chagrin of many Dutchmen and Germans the name stuck. Sources: Just something that I read about many years ago.
