Where did the Orthodox Church come from?
The Christian Church was founded on Pentecost on 33AD. It remained united until 1054, when the Patriarchates of Constantinople (East Rome at the time) and Rome (West at the time) parted ways by means of mutual excommunication over theological disputes (known today as The Great Schism of 1054). One of the most serious disputes stemmed from the Western claims of Papal supremacy over the entire Christian Church, despite the fact that there had been no central authority for over 10 centuries. Instead, the Christian Church as a whole depended upon Ecumenical Councils to define the faith and doctrines of Christianity. The other three Patriarchates at the time (Antioch, Alexandria, and Jerusalem) remained in union with Constantinople. The West became the Roman Catholic Church, and the East became the Eastern Orthodox Church.
