Where did the idea of having witches fly on broomsticks, have pointy hats, etc. originate from?
According to Raymond Buckland, who is a writer of many books on witchcraft, pointy hats used to be popular before tri-cornered hats (think Geoge Washington hats). Witches were depicted in art as wearing the old pointed hats because believing in paganism and not Christianity was “out of style” just as the pointed hats were. Also, he said the broom riding had to do with harvest rituals where pagans would jump and dance around their crops holding brooms. People who thought pagans were ‘in with the devil’ started going around saying that they saw these ‘witches’ flying on their brooms instead. These comments come from Buckland’s video “Witchcraft Today”.
flying witches came from the idea of “the witches ghost” a secret spirit given to one who masters the secrets of witchcraft…. the pointy hat came from the fad of the medieval days of the princesses in the conical hat and the idea of the circle about the witches head, like the angelic halo..lol broomsticks, came from the domestic woman and their need to be seen as “cleaning”, its a creation, however the later use was the image of the sexual image and the marriage ritual….jumping the broom… the rest is the images of woman tools used to model the image in things of the day…. (as a teacher in this art and more) i root out the truth…
