Where did the idea for Zapata Apartments come from?
In 2003, through a New Communities Program (NCP) planning process, residents throughout Logan Square identified a critical shortage of affordable, well-maintained rental units near under-enrolled neighborhood elementary and middle-schools. In response, the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA) kicked off a campaign to improve affordable housing options near Armitage Avenue area schools. With overwhelming support from the community, LSNA recruited Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation to develop affordable rental units along the corridor. Area residents, LSNA leaders and Bickerdike staff have been working since 2005 to refine and advance the project. Local leaders have reached out to neighbors about the project knocking on doors, surveying local businesses along Armitage Avenue, making presentations at schools, block clubs, community centers, and the homes of area residents, as well as attending numerous meetings with Aldermen and City officials.
