Where did the idea for Bullet Time originate?
Petri J¿rvilehto: The original ideas on Bullet Time date back all the way to ’97-’98 when we started working on the first Max Payne game. We had the idea of creating a game where the gameplay would be strongly influenced by John Woo’s Hong Kong action movies, like Hard-Boiled or Killer. Even in the early prototypes for the game we were thinking that slow-motion would have to be an integral gameplay element since it was simply so cool to run down a corridor with two berettas firing in slow-mo. Initially we were building Bullet Time “zones” into the game, where we had rooms and combat scenarios that would take place completely in slow-motion and time would only return back to normal once the combat was over. While that was cool, it could also result into rather frustrating gameplay when you were hunting the last enemy and moving slowly. So in the end we figured that it would work much better to give the Bullet Time control over to the player. And the rest is fast becoming history. IGN: H
