Where did the english language originate from?
Old English which became Middle and Modern English was spoken and written in what later became England. It was related to various North Germanic dialects. The first people to speak it in England were probably mercenaries (kinda the late Roman equivalent of Blackwater maybe) employed by the Romans who settled in England after their contracts were over. They took advantage of the breakdown of society in Britain caused by civil wars mass migrations and plague that caused confusion and invited their relatives to move in. Over the centuries English has borrowed words from many other languages, Latin, Greek, French, German, Old Norse, Dutch and many more. Go to the library to the 410 section and you will find plenty of books about this!
