Where did the DICE ideas come from?
In principle they have come from the systems in use at Informatics KB and the extensive experience of the people who built them. These systems have developed over many years and the core of DICE comes from the robustness of that existing design, coupled with an understanding of issues that still needed to be solved or developed further. There have been many technological improvements which the revised design can take advantage of. This has led to DICE being built on proven concepts that have been extended to make it, amongst other things, more scalable by use of standard directory services, more flexible in terms of devolved management and more secure. • What is the basic DICE architecture? You can read more about the DICE goals here. • Will the DICE model change much as DICE develops? Hopefully not. The basic design should be able to accommodate the sort of technologies that we want to use for file systems, even better mobile computing, etc. That is why considerable thought and effort
