Where did the art of Kigurumi come from?
The art of portraying characters by the use of masks and costumes is very old. Many societies and cultures in the past have used masks to portray fictional and non-fictional characters in their ceremonies and plays. In today’s society, the art of Kigurumi is being used to portray amusement park characters, team/school mascots, and characters in ice and stage shows. The art of Kigurumi is also now being performed by hobbyist (individuals who are not being paid to perform). Kigurumi hobbyist usually dress up as anime/manga/game characters characters. Kigurumi as it is performed by hobbyist had it’s genesis in Cosplay. Cosplay is a Japanese term for practice of “Costume Play”. Cosplay, like Kigurumi, usually involves an individual dressing up as a anime/manga/game character.
