Man has been marking himself and his goods for just about as long as he has be self-aware. Scientists have discovered that marks were found on the skin of the Iceman, a mummified human body dating from about 3300 B.C. It is believed those marks are ancient tattoos, and could be proof of the earliest know tattoos. There have been examples of tattoos found on Egyptian and Nubian mummies dating back to around 2000 B.C.
