Where did Sumatra Bioscience take its learnings from?
This pioneering work was undertaken by Sumatra Bioscience, a newly created R&D organisation under London Sumatra, which has a long heritage in crop breeding and cultivation. Sumatra Bioscience will spearhead the companys R&D activities and collaborative partnerships in oil palms and other food crops both in Indonesia and around the world. It inherits decades of R&D efforts undertaken by Lonsums Bah Lias Research Station. Sumatra Bioscience started in the early 1980s in Indonesia and has been researching on plantation crops such as palm oil, cocoa and rubber for more than 25 years. We also benefited from decades of research work carried out by Harrisons & Crosfields research stations in Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. The F1 hybridisation programme is the culmination of seven years of painstaking research by a team of world renowned scientists using techniques such as morphological screening, flow cytometry and molecular markers.
