Where Did Smoking Start?
The first smokers started around 5000 BC. Tobacco was a wild growing plant and someone, somewhere decided to dry and smoke the plant and thus smoking began. The original tobacco plants started in Peru and Ecuador. Just 4000 years ago, cannabis, or marijuana, was a commonly smoked herb in all of India. At first, smoking was not a recreational activity. Tribes used smoking as a way to talk with the Gods. This religious affiliation transformed over time and eventually manifested into the everyday activity it is today. The acceptance of smoking has run the full gambit as well. The terms holy, sinful, vulgar, deadly, health hazard among others have been linked to the act of smoking.
