By JOHN WATTERSON Published Date: 02 May 2009 Port Erin’s Phil Bell-Scott landed an impressive 340lb arapaima while fly-fishing at Gillham’s fishing resort near Krabi, Thailand last week. He also caught a second arapaima of 250lb and the two are almost certainly the biggest freshwater fish to be caught on fly by a large margin. The larger of the two took 80 minutes to land. Phil, an emergency services joint control room operator, used a self-made 10 weight fly rod which is relatively light for big fish (seven to eight weight is normal for trout) and a size 4/0 fry pattern fly tied by himself. Both of the arapaima catches were filmed by a San Francisco production company that was in the area compiling an angling programme to be screened on TV later
