Where did mound builders live in Ohio?
One way to find out where mound builders lived in Ohio is to use the information that scientists, called archaeologists, have found. Archaeologists have excavated earthen mounds throughout Ohio. The majority of mounds have been located in the southern half of the state. Some information has been gathered from excavations in the north, near Lake Erie, but not many. Many prehistoric people lived near lakes and rivers. This gave them water, trade routes and transportation. The soil was also rich in minerals and flint. The Ohio river provided routes for trading outside of Ohio. The Hopewell and Adena people, known for their mound work, built in the Scioto River valley around what is now Chillicothe, Ohio. Many mounds have also been found near Marietta, Miamisburg, Newark, and Cincinnati.
