Emperor Hirohito personally threatened to lead his Imperial Guard (the Konoe Division) to put down a military coup, known as the “February 26 Incident” in 1936. The coup, was led by a group of junior Japanese Army officers, which were put down, with the remaining hold outs, put to justice; or in the case of the enlisted men, allowed to return to their units.
